People sometime ask why I don't mention the diaconate to predominantly younger crowds. I love the diaconate and think we can utilize this calling much more extensively at this time in the Church's history. That said:![]()
1) the priesthood was created by Our Lord and Savior, the Diaconate by the Apostles. You can have a Church without Deacons, you can't have a Church without priests!![]()
2) more importantly, given the way the diaconate is currently organized, it is not open to young people and is a distraction from the first vocational question every young man or woman must ask... not priesthood or marriage... but CELIBACY for the sake of the Kingdom, a state of life explicitly endorsed by our Lord, or marriage. In my experience working with countless young men including a half dozen that actually entered seminary, diaconate, a vocation that in current practice is not open to young people, is an excuse for a man called to ministry not to consider priesthood and the celibacy that it requires.
