Attending Mass

Home / Attending Mass

All are welcome to share a Mass with us. Whether you are Catholic or not, the Mass at Sacred Heart is a beautiful celebration filled with prayer, liturgical music and fellowship, all in Our Lord’s presence.

Come for a visit and you will see why our parish is growing!

Are Children Welcome in Mass?

A resounding YES! Children are an essential part of the Mass at Sacred Heart and are welcome at all Masses. If your child becomes especially vocal, you may choose to join other parents in the back of the church, however it is not necessary.

What should I wear?

You are welcome at Sacred Heart to come as you are. However, many parishioners dress nicely in a show of respect knowing they will be in the presence of Our Lord. Some women wear traditional chapel veils and if you would like to wear one, there are a few provided in a basket near the main aisle. Modest dress is preferred, especially during the summer months.

Can I go to Communion?

You must be in a state of Grace to participate in the Eucharist.

Adults and Children who are not Catholic or have not yet received their First Holy Communion may participate in the Communion procession by crossing their arms over their chest.

For a complete explanation read Catechism of the Catholic Church.

How is Communion Received at Sacred Heart?

It is important to approach Communion with reverence, having examined our consciences and “discerning the body and the blood” (Cf. 1 Cor 11:27-29).

During the distribution of Holy Communion at Sacred Heart of Jesus, communicants are kindly requested to proceed to the communion rail and occupy any available space promptly. Please refrain from pausing in the aisle if there is an open position at the rail. Communicants may choose to kneel or stand while receiving the Eucharist. Upon receiving the Lord, individuals are expected to consume the host immediately and remain in place until this is completed. The priest and server will remain until you have fully received. Following reception, please take a moment to offer a prayer of thanksgiving for the gift of Our Lord’s Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity. There is no need to immediately depart from your place. We should rush toward communion, not away from it.

Individuals with specific medical requirements are kindly requested to consult with the priest or deacon in the sacristy prior to Holy Mass and to present themselves at the commencement of communion on the far right side of the communion rail.

Consistent with established church tradition and the directives of our bishop, individuals ineligible for communion are not to receive a blessing during the communion rite. A general blessing is conferred upon the entire assembly at the conclusion of the Mass.

Individuals seeking communion for the sick are required to consult with the pastor outside of Mass and adhere to the guidelines established by the bishop.

If I attend a Latin Mass will I be lost?

If you get to this Mass early, be sure to pick up a red Latin Mass booklet. This is a wonderful tool which will explain exactly what is going on in English on the opposite side of the latin pages. There are a limited number of these available. Keep in mind the Latin Mass lasts about an hour and a half.
