We are seeking for individuals to serve on one of 3 crews for light housekeeping in the church. The times are from the end of the morning mass for approximately 90 minutes. This is ideal for younger ladies or retirees that do not have little ones to worry about. It is a volunteer position. If we get enough volunteers, it would only require 90 mins, once per month. Please contact Shannon Leidel shannonleidel@gmail.com at or contact the parish office at (616) 287-0256 or parishoffice@sacredheartgr.org.

'A step back in time': America's Catholic Church sees an immense shift toward the old ways

I know it's late notice but if you are able I encourage you to attend tomorrow's meeting of the Mobile GR Commission to speak against requiring (and charging for) resident parking permits in the neighborhood of Sacred Heart. This seems like a horrible idea for our community! The Mobile GR Commission will be hearing public comments about the program at noon on May 2 at the Ryerson Auditorium (111 Library Street NE). Or send your comments or questions to MobileGR@grcity.us. Charging residents to park on the street in front of their homes seems fundamentally unjust. If there is a lack of public parking... it seems dishonest to suggest the solution is to charge residents for parking. If anything they should give property owners free parking for every 8 ft of road frontage they own and pay taxes on. If non-resident parking is an issue then charge non-residents.That said, Sacred Heart significantly contributes to the number of nonresidents parking in our neighborhood. We own and utilizes two city blocks near John Ball Park... creating a bureaucratic nightmare to park around our Church creates an unnecessary impediment to our right to freely exercise our religion. I am glad you are proposing to not enforce bans on Sundays, but our community joins together for worship every morning, not to mention occasional services in the afternoon, opportuniites for private prayer every day, fellowship, religious education, and recreation. We have been here in this neighborhood for over 100 years and while we own some parking we don't own enough for those who attend services here.Rather than pushing residents and long established neighborhood institutions out why not build stadiums, aquariums, and ampithearters outside city in locals that can accomidate the infrastructure needs!
