Palestrina 500 with Gaudete Grand Rapids – September 15, 2025

Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in Grand Rapids, MI will host a year-long choral festival called Palestrina 500, celebrating the quincentennial birthday of the great Renaissance composer Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (1525-94). This anniversary provides our parish a lens through which we can promote the good, true, and beautiful to our greater community.

1 Year. 12 Monthly Events. Each event contains:

-a Choral Meditation
-Solemn Mass
-Reception Afterwards

Palestrina 500 Volunteers Needed

Sacred Heart will host a year-long choral festival called Palestrina 500, celebrating the quincentennial birthday of the great Renaissance composer Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (1525-94). This anniversary provides our parish a lens through which we can promote the good, true, and beautiful to our greater community. There will be monthly events starting December 2024 and ending December 2025 each with a Choral Meditation, Solemn Mass, and Reception.

We have decided that moving forward we would have one sign up per monthly event. Thank you for donating your time. The full list of dates is below.  If you are able to sign up for all events, let us know and we will sign you up.  Mike Tober dre@shgr.org or Laureen Fish lfish@shgr.org

Family First Saturdays – Sept. 6

FAMILY FIRST SATURDAY RETURNS! Join us, September 6th – Remember, while first Saturdays are great for families, everyone is invited!! We would be so glad to have you join us for some really special things:

4. Potluck Breakfast*

5. Catechesis

6. Child Supervision

–Sprouts (Wee little ones)

–The Holy Barbarians (Boys)

–Little Flowers (5+ Young Ladies)

–Daughters of Mary (Elder Young Ladies)

The Potluck and Catechesis is held in the Academy Cafeteria after the Rosary which is after the Mass. You can take the tunnel into the school through the Marian side exit of the parish. *We are hosting a dietary restrictions table for foods reserved for allergen safety. *  You will also be able to access the cafeteria prior to Mass to drop off food and keep food hot. We would love to see you!

The Soccer Challenge is back!

The Knights of Columbus will be hosting “The Soccer Challenge” held on Tuesday September 9th during the Academy lunch hour. Entry forms are available in the academy office or online at sacredheartkofc.org. All are welcome.

Authenticum with Martin Cothron – Wed. Sept. 3

Please join us for Authenticum with Martin Cothron, Provost of Memoria College. His lecture is titled: THE “DEMON IRONY”: How Modern Literature and Art Have Turned Our Critical Faculties Upside Down

MARTIN COTHRAN is the Spokesperson and Sr. Policy Analyst for The Family Foundation. He is also the co-founder of Memoria Press and Highlands Latin School. He is editor of the Classical Teacher magazine, director of the Classical Latin School Association, and currently serves as provost for Memoria College. He has authored several widely used educational textbooks, including Traditional Logic, Books I and II, Material Logic: A Course on How to Think, Classical Rhetoric: A Study of Aristotle’s Principles of Persuasion, and Lingua Biblica: Old Testament Stories in Latin.

Authenticum presentations are approved for Catechetical Credit in the Catholic Diocese of Grand Rapids.

21st Annual Baby Bottle Boomerang

The Knights of Columbus will be sponsoring the 21st Annual Baby Bottle Boomerang again beginning the end of August and running until the end of September. All proceeds collected will go to HELP Pregnancy Center. Baby bottles will be available after all Mases later this month.
